As we continue with our monthly “What’s Trending in Construction” articles, the overwhelming headline this month is COVID-19 and its impact on the construction industry.

As a result, we deemed it fitting to focus on this developing issue for our April edition with five articles that we feel our readers should know about.

Construction Project Cancellations Rise Sharply

Construction Project Cancellations Rise Sharply

An article coming out of Globe St. (@globestcom) asserts what we’ve all been noticing across our industry: Construction project cancellations are on the rise due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The piece, which draws on market data from an Associated General Contractors of America survey, notes that 39% of contractors have reported either a halt or cancellation of their current projects.

Most interesting of all, only 18% of those surveyed mentioned being asked to halt by an elected official or government mandate. The others, it appears, are due to the financial and workforce shortage that have resulted from social distancing and quarantine measures. We will continue to keep an eye on these numbers as the weeks progress, but anticipate further drops to the market in April.

Mapping the Coronavirus Impact on US Construction

Mapping the Coronavirus Impact on US Construction

ConstructionDive (@ConstructDive) recently helped visualize the impact of coronavirus on US construction through an innovative new interactive map. The piece serves as an insightful source of information as companies, cities, and states make major moves regarding the construction industry.

Viewers have the ability to track the progress of some of the country’s biggest projects, as well as the legal status of continuing work in certain areas. Most telling of all is how the map points out places where construction has been halted altogether. Over time, it seems that an increasing number of districts are closing their doors to our industry, even though it is critical for many essential activities within the US economy. Only time will tell what the full scope of devastation will be.

SoFi Stadium Project Releases Statement on Worker Infected with COVID-19

SoFi Stadium Project Releases Statement on Worker Infected with COVID-19

Sports Illustrated (SInow) has been closely covering the construction of SoFi Stadium in Washington State, an almost $5 billion venture which is set to build one of the nation’s premier sports stadiums. Unfortunately, as the area has been one of the hardest hit by COVID-19, it seems that even the mega-projects are not immune from its adverse effects.

The job took a major hit as one of the workers involved had tested positive for the virus. Amid the bad news, there have been additional safety measures put into place to help mitigate coronavirus’ spread and isolate anyone who may have come into contact with said individual. With that said, the infected employee is reported to be recovering well, and construction is set to still continue.

Managing a Coronavirus-Related Project Shutdown

Managing a Coronavirus-Related Project Shutdown

When major disasters hit, it’s common for construction companies to have a plan to continue operations after they’ve been stopped. With something as rare and unexpected as COVID-19, however, many firms are wondering what their next steps should be. ConstructionDive (@ConstructDive) has compiled a helpful set of guidelines to assist with controlling the spread of the virus and ensuring the employees will be able to pick up where they left off once they receive the “all clear” to continue work again.

The list, which includes suggestions like locking up heavy machinery and removing valuable electronics like laptops, aims to preserve the integrity of the worksite cutting down on the risk factors associated with a dormant job site. The argument asserts that taking these precautions will prevent further financial losses and will position teams to continue work as soon as possible.

Penn Medicine Speeds Up Construction of $1.5B Philly Hospital by 15 Months

For our final article, we once again pull from ConstructionDive (@ConstructDive) to provide readers with another resource for keeping up with the latest information regarding the COVID-19 outbreak and its impact on the construction industry. The news source has set up a “coronavirus headquarter” that will quickly and efficiently disseminate new findings and information regarding the pandemic.

The latest to come out from their headquarters is a piece regarding the University of Pennsylvania, and how it has prioritized the construction of a new $1.5 billion hospital with hopes that it will provide some much-needed relief to victims in the surrounding area. So far, they’ve sped up the project’s timeline by fifteen months. Only time will tell if they are able to complete their mission.
